“Everything that can be done should be done to keep the Target stores open. The loss of 200 jobs and access to groceries and household goods will be a devastating loss to communities that can little afford it.
“The City should have not provided funding for the Target in the first place without guarantees that the store would remain open and that Target would have to repay the City for its subsidies if it closed. They need to stop handing out taxpayers money without preconditions and payback provisions.
“The Target issue also illustrates the City’s failure to develop and implement the type of economic development strategy that would create real economic opportunities in these long neglected areas. The North side gets a multi-billion dollar development supported by as much as a billion dollars in TIF monies while the South side gets a Target or a relocated polluting scrap iron facility or the polluting fleet management garages.”
